Call for Issue 11: Summer 2023
Curated by Kathy Greenwood

Deadline for submissions: April 1, 2023

Souvenir

Memories are sort of collage-like artifacts of the mind, full of overlap and questionable adhesion. Souvenirs are little memory coagulates — we acquire and revisit them to activate all of those layers of feelings and images.

For Cut Me Up Issue 11, artists are invited to delve into the trash-to-treasure spectrum of the souvenir. What sort of object or picture holds a memory of a special time and place? When it comes to travel, souvenirs can range from hastily purchased kitsch to pocketed seashells; glossy postcards to hand-made treasures. Souvenirs also mark stand-out life events — births, deaths, first love, childhood home. Long after a specific event, its souvenirs spark recollections of landscapes and customs, monuments and meanderings, and perhaps people who are dear to us and far away. This issue of Cut Me Up welcomes two-dimensional and sculptural submissions that interpret the idea of a souvenir — from the classic gift shop merch to more personal mementos.

Souvenir Exhibition at Albany International Airport

Selected works from Cut Me Up Issue 11 will be featured in an exhibition at Albany International Airport. We are excited to host the first in-person presentation of artist responses to Cut Me Up, and look forward to sharing them with our vistors, who have grown accustomed to seeing great art as part of their airport experience. The exhibition will be located in our Concourse A Gallery, which is a 130 linear foot corridor, post-security. About 4 million travelers pass through Albany Airport annually, and a significant portion of those will view the exhibitions in this location.
